VADO VIA DA TE: la tradizione del “pacco da giù” - I LOVE CALABRIA - Calabrian Taste

I'M GOING AWAY FROM YOU: the tradition of the "package from down"

the tradition of the "package from down" emigration to the north

Change is considered by all to be a form of positive growth, as long as no one is forced to change. Habits, which are part of our daily lives, shape our mind, often gripped by memories and emotions.

Even before the unification of Italy, the exodus from the south to the north was the symbol of a great change of life for a man and his family: the transfer was an attempt to improve one's life which brought with it disenchantment respect to its origins.

Maintaining traditions was one of the ways to feel anchored to one's land: so that grandmother's homemade pasta was combined with the tradition of "Bolognese" sauce and "good" wine and oil enriched polenta-based dinners on the tables of the Italians who placed in that journey not only the expectation of change, but also the hope of not losing their origins.

The link with childhood memories was reactivated when the "immigrants from the south" received a "package from below" from their loved ones: the simplicity of life lived in the small provincial town resurfaced in the new social and cultural dimension of the big city welcomed them.

The scent of some foods, the genuine taste and flavor and the sight of boxes and labels that were part of life in the provinces, have the power to dust off the memories of a past time, which suddenly resurfaces from the maze of memory, like when you leaf through an old photo album, giving young and old a sense of their origins.

The exodus from the south to the north of the family, of the past, and of the young in search of fortune, today, is lightened whenever a "package from downstairs" arrives, above all if from the mother or grandmother who are also concerned distance if “the child has eaten”. Caring through food isn't just a cultural legacy, but it's a way to show unexpressed affection, using a gift instead of words. With the "package from down" not only typical products of the land of origin are sent, but also emotions and affection that only those who receive it can understand its meaning.

The peculiarity of the "pack from down" lies in the care of the choice of the product; licorice for drops in blood pressure, jam to sweeten the awakening, tuna for light lunches, good wine, which accompanies winter evenings in front of the fireplace, are much more than a simple culinary gift: they tell people's stories, of preferences, known only by those who love and who, thanks to the patience to listen and the right attention to store, carefully prepare the "package from below".

And the project bearing this name was born from the initiative of a young Calabrian entrepreneur: Giacomo Caputo, originally from Rossano, who like many young people experienced life in the capital as a student, receiving a monthly package from his family. Today he himself, back in his home in Calabria, is the proponent of this initiative, which he wants to tell in a short interview.

How did the “package from down” project come about?
Our "Pacco da sotto" is not just a simple selection of the best Calabrian products, but a container of emotions! Do you remember grandma's jam or her preserves? The typical Christmas sweets spent near the fireplace with the family or those bergamot or almond drinks that refreshed entire families? I thought of reviving those emotions and giving dignity to a land that churns out many excellent products unknown to many.
How do you intend to develop this project in the future?
I imagine many small I Love Calabria shops scattered throughout Europe where in addition to the sale there is a small kitchen for quick meals and aperitifs.
What does it mean for you to be back in your land?
For me it is an act of love! I see so many young people who, despite the thousand difficulties, are fighting for their land: I am with them!
